| Vaccines | Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) is one of many substances naturally produced in response to injury. EGF was discovered by Dr. Stanley Cohen. EGF was initially isolated in Cuba from the salivary glands of rats. Through genetic engineering, large quantities of EGF were produced for use in animal studies. Conclusions from these animal studies prompted the use of EGF in patients who had suffered burns in Cuba. EGF was added to ointments containing silver sulfadizine and two groups of patients were part of the double blind study. EGF reduced the morbidity and length of therapy for burn patients. With the success of EGF in Cuba, EGF was exported to the Eastern European bloc and the USSR for more clinical trials. Today, EGF is marketed globally by Cuba. |
